NY Times - Treason?

Thursday, June 29, 2006

NY Times is being branded a traitor.

The Bush administration's attempt to demonize the New York Times -- a newspaper that gave the administration plenty of aid and comfort when the White House was spinning lies about WMDs in Iraq -- will be remembered as one of the ugliest chapters in the history of press freedom in the United States.
The question that will ultimately be asked is not whether the Times did the right thing in revealing to the American people the details of Bush-authorized spying programs--by any measure, the newspaper was right to do what it did and history will provide more than enough vindication.
Nichols is correct in that the Times gave a lot of leeway to this regime. They held off - at the regime's request - the release of spying information. So happy they are bringing to light the abuses of power and rights.

I think Kucinich says it best:

This Administration is angry that the media leaked the story about it snooping into the bank records of millions of Americans. It supporters in Congress want to formally condemn the New York Times. What a bunch of baloney.
"It is about time the media did its job of protecting the public interest. If the media and this Congress had shown some independence from the party line of this Administration, the claims of WMDs would have been dismissed, and fact there was no connection between Iraq and 9/11 would have been well established and we would not have gone to war against Iraq.
"A few years ago, a movie, Wag the Dog, told of how a US administration misused its communications power to create phony stories to put the nation into an international conflict. This Administration not only wagged the dog in Iraq, but, with the help of its fabricators at the Rendon and Lincoln groups, it has wagging a whole kennel.
"In a free society the media cannot be a lap dog of any Administration. The First Amendment states, 'Congress shall make no law abridging freedom of speech', except of course, under this Administration."

Opponents of Iraq war rally around Lt. Watada

Earlier this month, Watada revealed that he intended to refuse orders to head out to Iraq in what he believes is an illegal war of occupation.
Watada said he, too, would try to mount a case about the legality of the war under international law and American law.
And during a news conference for Watada last Monday, retired Army Col. Ann Wright said officers have the right to disobey illegal orders under principles established during the Nuremberg trials.

Thanks also to Shannon who sent me the link to a clip about this unsung hero.

U.S. drafts plan for steep troop cuts in Iraq

U.S. drafts plan for steep troop cuts in Iraq

The top U.S. commander in Iraq has drafted a plan that projects steep reductions in the U.S. military presence there by the end of 2007, The New York Times reported on Saturday.
Citing U.S. officials with knowledge of a classified Pentagon briefing this week by Gen. George Casey, the Times said the first cuts would come in September, and the number of U.S. combat brigades in Iraq is then projected to fall to five or six from the current level of 14 by the end of next year.
The withdrawals are greater than many experts and analysts had expected, the Times said on its Web site in a story to be published in its Sunday edition. The officials spoke of the Pentagon briefing on condition of anonymity, and some described the plan as more of a forecast than a hard timeline.
Great news right? Oh wait - a little caveat:
The withdrawals would depend on continued progress among Iraqi security forces and a drop in Sunni Arab hostility toward the new Iraqi government, and assume that the insurgency will not expand beyond Iraq's six central provinces, the Times said.
Oh well, there goes that plan.

Bush Does Chaplin

Google Video of W dancing with a giant Earth balloon.

So reminiscent of Charlie Chaplin in "The Great Dictator" toying with Mother Earth.

And in that movie Chaplin's character closes with a great speech so appropriate for today:

"Soldiers! don’t give yourselves to brutes - men who despise you - enslave you - who regiment your lives - tell you what to do - what to think and what to feel! Who drill you - diet you - treat you like cattle, use you as cannon fodder. Don’t give yourselves to these unnatural men - machine men with machine minds and machine hearts! You are not machines! You are not cattle! You are men! You have the love of humanity in your hearts! You don’t hate! Only the unloved hate - the unloved and the unnatural! Soldiers! Don’t fight for slavery! Fight for liberty! In the 17th Chapter of St Luke it is written: “the Kingdom of God is within man” - not one man nor a group of men, but in all men! In you! You, the people have the power - the power to create machines. The power to create happiness! You, the people, have the power to make this life free and beautiful, to make this life a wonderful adventure. Then - in the name of democracy - let us use that power - let us all unite. Let us fight for a new world - a decent world that will give men a chance to work - that will give youth a future and old age a security. By the promise of these things, brutes have risen to power. But they lie! They do not fulfil that promise. They never will! Dictators free themselves but they enslave the people! Now let us fight to fulfil that promise! Let us fight to free the world - to do away with national barriers - to do away with greed, with hate and intolerance. Let us fight for a world of reason, a world where science and progress will lead to all men’s happiness. Soldiers! in the name of democracy, let us all unite!"
I wish W would listen to this speech and copy this part of Chaplin.

A Genesis Story for Today

Received this in an e-mail. Not sure of the source or author. The real Genesis:

"In the beginning, God created the Heavens and the Earth and populated the Earth with broccoli, cauliflower and spinach, green and yellow and red vegetables of all kinds, so Man and Woman would live long and healthy lives. Then using God's great gifts, Satan created Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream and Krispy Creme Donuts. And Satan said, "You want chocolate with that?" And Man said, "Yes!" and Woman said, "and as long as you're at it, add some sprinkles." And they gained 10 pounds. And Satan smiled.
And God created the healthful yogurt that Woman might keep the figure that Man found so fair. And Satan brought forth white flour from the wheat, and sugar from the cane and combined them. And Woman went from size 6 to size 14.
So God said, "Try my fresh green salad." And Satan presented Thousand-Island Dressing, buttery croutons and garlic toast on the side. And Man and Woman unfastened their belts following the repast God then said, "I have sent you heart healthy vegetables and olive oil in which to cook them." And Satan brought forth deep fried fish and chicken-fried steak so big it needed its own platter. And Man gained more weight and his cholesterol went through the roof.
God then created a light, fluffy white cake, named it "Angel Food Cake," and said, "It is good." Satan then created chocolate cake and named it "Devil's Food."
God then brought forth running shoes so that His children might lose those extra pounds. And Satan gave cable TV with a remote control so Man would not have to toil changing the channels. And Man and Woman laughed and cried before the flickering blue light and gained pounds.
Then God brought forth the potato, naturally low in fat and brimming with nutrition. And Satan peeled off the healthful skin and sliced the starchy center into chips and deep-fried them. And Man gained pounds. God then gave lean beef so that Man might consume fewer calories and still satisfy his appetite. And Satan created McDonald's and its 99-cent double cheeseburger. Then said, "You want fries with that?" And Man replied, "Yes! And super size them!" And Satan said, "It is good." And Man went into cardiac arrest.
God sighed and created quadruple bypass surgery. Then Satan created HMOs."

Buzzflash looks at the Sears Tower threat.

While we have not denied there were indeed rumors and boasts of committing acts of terror, a careful examination of the facts makes it clear that the Miami group was not as serious a threat as portrayed in the media. They had no operational ability beyond their mouths.
The timing of the raid, given that there was no immediate operational threat, appears politically motivated. The Bush Administration wanted to scare Americans and tie the Iraq War to terror after a Senate debate on redeployment that very morning.
Bush has said for years that the point of going to Iraq was to draw out terrorists there to prevent them from coming here. If anything, the most newsworthy aspect of this story is that the suspects were largely American citizens, operating within our borders, and not even Arab, which means that our focus on War in Iraq does not address threats that could be more immediate.
Buzzflash also looks at some of the "facts" and details of the case as reported by MSM. I wonder what the informant/plant's role was?

Buzzflash notes that this may have been timed for the debates. I agree but I also think we can expect more cases as the elections near. Have to keep our little base of power whole.

Earth warmest in 400 years -

Thursday, June 22, 2006

400 years! (Or maybe 2,000 or more years.)

Weighing in on the highest profile debate about global warming, the nation's premier science policy body on Thursday voiced a "high level of confidence" that Earth is the hottest it has been in at least 400 years, and possibly even the last 2,000 years.
A panel convened by the National Research Council reached that conclusion in a broad review of scientific studies, reporting that the evidence indicates “recent warmth is unprecedented for at least the last 400 years.”>br> The panel of top climate scientists told lawmakers that the Earth is running a fever and that “human activities are responsible for much of the recent warming.”
They also considered the data reliable enough to conclude there were sharp spikes in carbon dioxide and methane, the two major greenhouse gases blamed for trapping heat in the atmosphere, beginning in the 20th century, after remaining fairly level for 12,000 years.
Between 1 A.D. and 1850, volcanic eruptions and solar fluctuations were the main causes of changes in greenhouse gas levels. But those temperature changes “were much less pronounced than the warming due to greenhouse gas” levels since the mid-19th century, the report said.
Gee I wonder if W is reconsidering his previous statements and will go see "An Inconvenient Truth?"

Am I nuts? His oil and automaker friends won't allow that.

U.S. weighs shootdown of N. Korea missile

The Bush administration is weighing responses to a possible North Korean missile test that include attempting to shoot it down in flight over the Pacific, defense officials told The Associated Press on Tuesday.
Robert Einhorn, a senior adviser at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said a U.S. shootdown of a North Korean missile on a test flight or a space launch would draw "very strong international reaction" against the United States. He saw only a small chance that the U.S. would attempt a shootdown.
Let's hope he's right - a small non-existent chance.

CO2 Levels Doubled - Texas #1

Tuesday, June 20, 2006

US PIRG reports

Twenty-eight states more than doubled their carbon dioxide emissions between 1960 and 2001, according to a new analysis of government data released today by the U.S. Public Interest Research Group (U.S. PIRG). Increased combustion of oil to fuel cars and light trucks and coal for electricity drove the steep rise in emissions.
The report was released on the same day that Rep. Henry Waxman of California introduced the Safe Climate Act, a science-based approach to dramatically reduce global warming pollution.
And the big winner?
Among the states, Texas ranked first in the nation for the highest emissions of carbon dioxide in 2001, releasing 12% of the nation’s total.
Boy another thing to be proud of - this honor and being the home of the worst Prez in history.

'Wash Post' Obtains Shocking Memo from U.S. Embassy in Baghdad

Monday, June 19, 2006

'Wash Post' Obtains Shocking Memo from U.S. Embassy in Baghdad I guess the success and improving conditions memo didn't filter down to everyone.

The Washington Post has obtained a cable, marked "sensitive," that it says shows that just before President Bush left on a surprise trip last Monday to the Green Zone in Baghdad for an upbeat assessment of the situation there, "the U.S. Embassy in Iraq painted a starkly different portrait of increasing danger and hardship faced by its Iraqi employees."
This cable outlines, the Post reported Sunday, "the daily-worsening conditions for those who live outside the heavily guarded international zone: harassment, threats and the employees' constant fears that their neighbors will discover they work for the U.S. government."
It's actually far worse than that...
So where are the bright spots? Just in the Green Zone?

Court Splits Over Wetlands Protections

Court Splits Over Wetlands Protections

The Supreme Court set the stage for a re-examination of the 1972 Clean Water Act, as it narrowly ruled today in favor of two Michigan property owners who have sought to develop tracts designated as wetlands.
By 5 to 4, the justices overturned lower court judgments against the Michigan land owners, who had run afoul of the Clean Water Act over their plans to build a shopping mall and condominiums.
For purposes of the 1972 Clean Water Act, wetlands are defined as "those areas that are inundated or saturated by surface or ground water at a frequency and duration sufficient to support, and that under normal circumstances do support, a prevalence of vegetation typically adapted for life in saturated soil conditions. Wetlands generally include swamps, marshes, bogs and similar areas." When the Rapanos and Carabell cases were argued on Feb. 21, a lawyer for Mr. Rapanos said a strict reading of the legislation showed that Congress gave specific authority to regulate only navigable waters and any neighboring wetlands.
Mr. Rapanos's case involves three wetlands, one of which is 20 miles from a navigable waterway but next to a drainage ditch that flows into a river. Land owned by Keith and June Carabell includes a wetland tract separated from navigable water by an earthen berm and by impermeable clay below ground.
I have been involved in land trusts for many years. When the land trust received a large tract of wetlands, an abutting neighbor commented that it was no big deal that the land trust took the land since it was designated as wetlands and protected by law. I commented that the law is no guarantee. Commissions change, Congress changes, greed is all-encompassing.

Proof positive with this case.

Another Blank Check For Perpetual War

That's how The Nation, and reported on CBS, calls this. And rightly so.

The Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives maintained its track record of providing absolutely no checks and balances on the Bush administration's warmaking this week, when it voted 351-67 to authorize another $66 billion in "emergency" spending for the occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan.

$66 billion! How many homes can be built in New Orleans for that amount? How many meals can be served to the homeless? How many advances can be made in researching and implementing alternative energy sources?

America's Image Slips

Thursday, June 15, 2006

Pew Global Attitudes Project reports

America's global image has again slipped and support for the war on terrorism has declined even among close U.S. allies like Japan. The war in Iraq is a continuing drag on opinions of the United States, not only in predominantly Muslim countries but in Europe and Asia as well. And despite growing concern over Iran's nuclear ambitions, the U.S. presence in Iraq is cited at least as often as Iran - and in many countries much more often - as a danger to world peace.
Crap. Will other nations attack and institute regime change here?

Space Weapons are our right?

The United States on Tuesday reasserted its right to develop weapons for use in outer space to protect its military and commercial satellites and ruled out any global negotiations on a new treaty to limit them.
Washington sees no need for negotiations to prevent an arms race in space as a 40-year-old international treaty banning weapons of mass destruction in space remains adequate, he said.

It was a dramatic move by Bush, traveling to violence-rattled Baghdad less than a week after the death of terror chief Abu Musab al-Zarqawi in a bombing attack. The president was expected to be in Baghdad a little more than five hours.

US refuses to rule out attacks.

America has refused to give Iran guarantees that it will not use military force against its nuclear sites, according to a leading US official (Richard Beeston writes).
John Bolton, the US envoy to the UN, said that incentives offered to Iran this week in return for suspending its uranium enrichment work did not include military commitments. President Bush has insisted on keeping “all options open” in dealing with Iran, which many suspect is secretly building an atomic weapon under the guise of a civilian nuclear programme.

Set up - martyrdom - internal squabble?

Thursday, June 08, 2006

Financial Times reports that...

Showing graphic pictures of the dead al-Qaeda leader’s bloodied head, a spokesman for the US-led coalition on Thursday elaborated on how the operation to strike at Abu Musab al-Zarqawi had unfolded.
The information that led to the air strike that killed him came from within Zarqawi’s own network, said Maj Gen Bill Caldwell.
So who squealed? Was this a move for martyrdom? The al-Qaeda websites referred to him as such almost immediately. Did he make the ultimate sacrifice for his cause? Or was he set up in a power play?

The King is dead, long live the King...

The "termination" of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi will surely be a poll number boost for W. He should see a spike in numbers over the next few days until the killings and bombs continue. Does W and his believers really think that "terminating" this one man will bring peace? Doesn't he realize that someone else will rise up and take his place? Someone else will put on a mask and behead a victim on tape. Someone else will orchestrate a series of killings to proclaim themselves as the new boss.

A few points in the polls, but more deaths on the horizon.

I think that Michael Berg, the father of Nick Berg who was beheaded by Zarqawi(he was at least accused of being the machete wielder) on tape, had the most rational statement to date:

“..no sense of relief, just sadness that another human being had to die.”
“As the poet John Donne said, any man’s death diminishes me. It doesn’t bring my son back, and this will just bring a new cycle of revenge killings.”

Iraq better off without Saddam...

Don't tell the 6,000 bodies.

Iraq's main morgue had never received that huge number of corpses on a daily basis - not since modern Iraq was established in 1920s.
According to statistics by Iraq's morgues institute, 6,002 corpses were found in the past five months: 1,068 in January, 1,110 in February, 1,294 in March, 1,155 in April and 1,375 in May.
Most of the corpses had gunshot wounds, while others showed marks of burns or electrocution.
Morgues institute officials said that since the institute was established in 1927, it had never received such a huge number of corpses as currently, with the daily average now 35 to 50 per day.
Before the US-led coalition invasion of Iraq and the toppling of Saddam Hussein in 2003, the institute used to receive only seven to 10 corpses per day.
Hey, we never promised Iraq stability - did we?

The Terrorist Crystal Ball

US Officials are consulting the tarot decks and I-Ching.

U.S. officials believe Canadian arrests over the weekend and three recent domestic incidents in the United States are evidence the U.S. will soon be hit again by a terrorist attack. Privately, they say, they'd be surprised if it didn't come by the end of the year, reports CBS News correspondent Jim Stewart in a CBS News exclusive.
The first of the domestic incidents, all of which drew little attention at the time, began with the holdup of a string of Torrance, Calif. gas stations last summer. Muslim converts who bonded together in prison planned to use the robberies to finance attacks on 20 Army recruiting stations.
Analysts now conclude similarities between all the cases were dramatic: All were self-financed, self-motivated, and in each case the men were seeking out others to join their cell.
In short, Osama bin Laden didn't pay for these plots, recruit for them or even know of them. They were all totally homegrown — even amateurish. But if four, including the one in Canada, have been uncovered in just 11 months, officials fear there are inevitably other plots that have not been and are maturing even now.
The next attack here, officials predict, will bear no resemblance to Sept. 11. The casualty toll will not be that high, the target probably not that big. We may not even recognize it for what it is at first, they say. But it's coming — of that they seem certain.
Setting the ground work? With this type of report, can other robberies be linked to terrorists? How about the loacl 7-11? What will make them the acts of terrorists? Is it required that they be "Muslim converts?"

We have not had the fear card played in quite awhile. Will Chertoff bring back the color alert system?

Just in time for the elections.

Iraq rejects US probe clearing troops of killings

Iraq rejects US probe clearing troops of killings. Looks like our whitewash failed in some circles.

Iraq vowed on Saturday to press on with its own probe into the deaths of civilians in a U.S. raid on the town of Ishaqi, rejecting the U.S. military's exoneration of its forces.
"We have from more than one source that the Ishaqi killings were carried out under questionable circumstances. More than one child was killed. This report was not fair for the Iraqi people and the children who were killed," he told Reuters.
The U.S. military had issued a statement about Ishaqi saying allegations that U.S. troops "executed a family ... and then hid the alleged crimes by directing an air strike, are absolutely false".
The Iraqis are so ungrateful. We have brought the best money can buy to Iraq to run their oil fields. We have brought the best security forces money could buy. What more can they want. DEmocracy? Freedom from foreign powers? Ungrateful bastards. They should learn to put up with the occassional massacre. It is all in the name of the "path to freedom."

Haditha Signals Beginning of End of Iraq War

Friday, June 02, 2006

Haditha Signals Beginning of End of Iraq War. Interesting points raised here as to why Haditha is far worse than My Lai - even though the dead in My Lai far outnumbered those in Haditha.

What allegedly was done at Haditha was not done by raw draftees, or conscripts, but by elite professionals — that is, by highly trained and highly disciplined troops.
That the Marines would be edgy and angry at the death of a comrade is understandable. They didn't, though, then go on a rampage. Instead, their alleged killings were spaced out and deliberate.
First they apparently stopped a car with four students in it, ordered them out and shot all. Then, they entered three houses and killed almost everyone in it, of whatever sex and age.
The second critical differences between the two outrages is that the alleged crime in Haditha happened after Mai Lai took place.
This means that all the publicity about that earlier crime, and all the shame so many Americans then felt about it and expressed so clearly and loudly, and all the systems and controls instituted by the military to make sure it could never happened again, made not the slightest bit of difference.
Indeed, it appears that one new practice instituted by the U.S. military since the Mai Lai massacre amounts to a technique for covering up crimes like it. This relates to the way the cover story about the alleged Haditha massacre began to fall apart.
The killings happened last November. Once it was realized that some of those shot down could not have been insurgents — the dead included women and children, one as young as 2 years old — approval was given for cash payments to be given to survivors as compensation.
But there is one similarity - at least we hope...
The alleged Haditha massacre, once its full details are made public, will undoubtedly push American public opinion toward the same tipping point.
Abu Graib. Guantanamo. Haditha. And most probably many others which now will come to light. We are witnessing the beginning of the end of the Iraq war.
... We hope!

It is a classic case of Vietnam-like mission confusion. Frustrated Marines are on edge, and have a hard time separating enemies from allies in this war. The original mission--finding weapons of mass Destruction and supporting democracy--have gone up in smoke. The troops are left in the middle of a civil war, viewed with hostility by many of the people they are supposedly there to help.
This section stated the reasons for the mess perfectly.
