Musharraf: Suspending Constitution Will Help Transition to Democracy

PAKISTAN President Pervez Musharraf has said he has imposed emergency rule to help complete the transition from military to civilian-led democracy, appealing to the international community for understanding.
General Musharraf has suspended Pakistan's constitution, deploying troops and sacking a top judge in a bid to reassert his flagging authority against political rivals and Islamist militants.
Gen Musharraf said Pakistan needed time to reach the level of democracy enjoyed by the West.
