Marines and the 'massacre'

Monday, May 29, 2006

The above was taken so many years ago in My Lai. History repeats itself in Haditha.

In Washington, Congressman John Murtha, a former Marine and a harsh critic of the war, said that the episode might prove to be America’s darkest hour in Iraq.
“This is the kind of war you have to win the hearts and minds of the people. And we’re set back every time something like this happens. This is worse than Abu Ghraib,” he told ABC television.
“Who covered it up? Why did they cover it up? Why did they wait so long?” Mr Murtha said.
My Lai was one of the major turning points in Vietnam, After Life ran the photos, many more began questioning our role, presence and attitude towards the war. Will Haditha prove to be the same?

There is one difference between the two wars and the massacres. We, now, do not have the type of coverage of the war as we did in Vietnam. Back then the first stories Cronkite led with with the stories from Vietnam. Reporters and cameras were not shackled by the "embedded reporters" rules of today. Then we saw the bodies being brought home. Now the stories lead with the box office numbers for The Da Vinci Code. And why is this? Is this because this war and the lives lost aren't important? Or is it because there is a concerted effort and edict to keep this war out of our sight so W and friends can continue the escapade.

We have truly entered the dumbing down of America.

Bye Bye Joe

Support for a Challenger to Longtime Sen. Joe Lieberman Indicates Tensions Over Iraq War

Gaining the support of MoveOn's political action committee was Ned Lamont, a businessman who wants to unseat Lieberman largely because of the veteran lawmaker's staunch support for the war in Iraq.
The group announced its backing after polling MoveOn's members in Connecticut.
While the online poll was being conducted, Lieberman was at a Washington dinner receiving an award from the Committee on the Present Danger, the hawkish foreign policy group whose membership includes prominent conservatives and leading supporters in both parties of the Iraq war.
MoveOn has emerged as a leading voice for left-leaning activists, and the endorsement marks the first time that its PAC has sought to unseat an incumbent Democratic senator.
"Lamont's message resonated with members who want a senator who will stand up to President Bush on key issues and represent the views of most people in Connecticut," said Eli Pariser, executive director of the MoveOn PAC.
With the endorsement, the group will seek to raise money and generate volunteers for Lamont among MoveOn's 3.2 million members nationwide.
Lamont earlier this week gained an endorsement from Democracy for America, a liberal grass-roots group that Howard Dean established as his campaign for the 2004 Democratic presidential nomination foundered. Dean gave up his leadership role when he became chairman of the Democratic National Committee last year, but the group is headed by his brother, Jim Dean.
Lamont's candidacy also has become a priority for many liberal websites, such as Daily Kos — whose founder, Markos Moulitsas Zuniga, recently appeared in one of Lamont's television advertisements.
It just wasn't that kiss Joe. It was much more than that. Maybe W can you you a job for the last two years of his term.

What If They Gave a War...?

What If They Gave a War...? Where are the voices screaming against the war or yelling at W and his cronies?

I'll tell you where they are. They're at home, tuning in to root for the next "American idol." They're plugged into their iPods, utterly self-involved and disconnected from what lies just outside their doors. They're spending 25 hours a week playing video games in virtual worlds instead of fighting to save the only world that really matters. They're surfing porn. They're text messaging and e-mailing and scheming to close that next big deal. They're flogging their useless crap on eBay.
All that technology at their fingertips, and they're completely blind. Two terms for George W. Bush? They're deaf and dumb, too.
Bread and circuses. The government and the corporations are giving us bread and circuses to keep us sufficiently distracted so the powers that be can pursue their agendas. Television (flat screens only, please) serves up Donald Trump and Paris Hilton as role models, and gives us the abomination of Fox News, which is more a wolf in sheep's clothing than any Vulpes vulpes you're likely to encounter.
Hollywood only cares about blockbusters, chick flicks and inane buddy movies. Tiresome reality doesn't make for good escapism and, more importantly, it doesn't fill coffers. And George Clooney can't be expected to produce every movie.
Whither the press? Forget it. Britney Spears gets more ink -- and better play -- than global warming does.
So true...so true...so sad.

Shots fired at Capital...

A lone gunman?

"At 10:30 this morning, we received a report of shots fired inside the Rayburn garage," Sgt. Kimberly Schneider, a public information officer for the Capitol Police, said.
"At this time, we continue to investigate. We have tactical teams inside the building."
Armed officers were going door-to-door checking offices in the building.
Schneider said there was no indication that anyone had been hurt.
In separate report, officials said two women reported a man with a gun inside a Rayburn gym.
Does anyone know where Cheney is? Are there quail nesting in the garage?

A few observations on the Countdown Banner to the right.

  1. Wouldn't it be great if this timer was the worst case scenarion - nice if W left office even before 1/20/09!
  2. Hell to pay if someone just like him takes over on 1/20/09 - or even worse if the regime declares martial law/monarchy/prezident for life. That scenario would come with a very costly price!
  3. As that timer for W's "bye-bye" goes down, the cost of the war counter goes up.

A Missed Opportunity

Iran Proposal to US Offered Peace With Israel. But.....

Iran offered in 2003 to accept peace with Israel and cut off material assistance to Palestinian armed groups and to pressure them to halt terrorist attacks within Israel's 1967 borders, according to the secret Iranian proposal to the United States.
The Iranian negotiating proposal indicated clearly that Iran was prepared to give up its role as a supporter of armed groups in the region in return for a larger bargain with the United States. What the Iranians wanted in return, as suggested by the document itself as well as expert observers of Iranian policy, was an end to U.S. hostility and recognition of Iran as a legitimate power in the region.
Peace treaty? We don't need any stinking treaty when we have W as our cowboy in charge!

So why ignore or reject this offer? Oil? The Second Coming? Machismo? Global domination?

The Bush Putsch: Officers Speak -

Alterman reports on military man and historian Andrew Bacevich and his views of recent W activities.

Yes, it was a disaster. Yes, it was terrible. But by God, this was a disaster that could be turned to enormous advantage. Here lay the chance to remove constraints on the exercise of American military power, enabling the Bush administration to shore up, expand, and perpetuate U.S. global hegemony. Toward that end, senior officials concocted this notion of a Global War on Terror, really a cover story for an effort to pacify and transform the broader Middle East, a gargantuan project which is doomed to fail. Committing the United States to that project presumed a radical redistribution of power within Washington. The hawks had to cut off at the knees institutions or people uncomfortable with the unconstrained exercise of American power. And who was that? Well, that was the CIA. That was the State Department, especially the State Department of Secretary Colin Powell. That was the Congress.
A putsch, a coup, a revolution? Clearly a raping of the Constitution. The changes and abberations W instigated may haunt us through the next prezident's cycle unless Congress gets some balls and takes back some power and reinstates the Constitution.

If not, maybe it is time for a "People Coup."

The Constitutional Record of George W. Bush

Power Surge is a book promoted by the Cato Institute - far from your everday radical organization.

Executive Summary
In recent judicial confirmation battles, President Bush has repeatedly—and correctly—stressed fidelity to the Constitution as the key qualification for service as a judge. It is also the key qualification for service as the nation's chief executive. On January 20, 2005, for the second time, Mr. Bush took the presidential oath of office set out in the Constitution, swearing to "preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States." With five years of the Bush administration behind us, we have more than enough evidence to make an assessment about the president's commitment to our fundamental legal charter
Unfortunately, far from defending the Constitution, President Bush has repeatedly sought to strip out the limits the document places on federal power. In its official legal briefs and public actions, the Bush administration has advanced a view of federal power that is astonishingly broad, a view that includes
* a federal government empowered to regulate core political speech—and restrict it greatly when it counts the most: in the days before a federal election;
* a president who cannot be restrained, through validly enacted statutes, from pursuing any tactic he believes to be effective in the war on terror;
* a president who has the inherent constitutional authority to designate American citizens suspected of terrorist activity as "enemy combatants," strip them of any constitutional protection, and lock them up without charges for the duration of the war on terror— in other words, perhaps forever; and
* a federal government with the power to supervise virtually every aspect of American life, from kindergarten, to marriage, to the grave.

President Bush's constitutional vision is, in short, sharply at odds with the text, history, and structure of our Constitution, which authorizes a government of limited powers.
Don't you feel sorry for W? Taking hits from all sides.

On second thought - NAH!

Bush vs. Gore - Round II

Tuesday, May 23, 2006

It seems W won't be going to see "An Inconvenient Truth." (Truthout.org)

"New technologies will change how we live and how we drive our cars, which all will have the beneficial effect of improving the environment," Bush said. "And in my judgment we need to set aside whether or not greenhouse gases have been caused by mankind or because of natural effects and focus on the technologies that will enable us to live better lives and at the same time protect the environment."
Gore said the causes of global warming should not be ignored.
"Why should we set aside the global scientific consensus," Gore said, his voice rising with emotion. "Is it because Exxon Mobil wants us to set it aside? Why should we set aside the conclusion of scientists in the United States, including the National Academy of Sciences, and around the world including the 11 most important national academies of science on the globe and substitute for their view the view of Exxon Mobil. Why?"
"I'm a grandfather and he's a father and this should not be a political issue," Gore said. "And he should ask the National Academy of Sciences ... whether or not human beings are contributing to global warming."
W and his crew are the few who want to ignore global warming's causes and outcomes. They won't see the movie, but I will.

I wonder how much it would cost to project the movie somewhere on The Mall? As long as it is visible from the White House it may be worth it!

Make Me an Instrument of Peace

Saturday, May 20, 2006

Make Me an Instrument of Peace is the prayer of St. Francis of Assisi. Love this prayer/poem. Cindy Sheehan adressed the Spiritual Activism Conference and used the prayer and Francis as a model of living.

Good people have followed in the tradition of St. Francis and one does not have to be a practicing Catholic, or a practicing anything, to appreciate the words of St. Francis. I think the Peace Community who takes Martin Luther King, Jr., Gandhi, and Henry David Thoreau rightly as its icons can also look to St. Francis for guidance and inspiration.
She further goes on commenting on the lines of the prayer:
Being an instrument of peace is immensely more important than working for peace. Our entire lives must radiate this peace. We must be peace to have peace. I am coming into an understanding of this as I strive for true and lasting peace. Being anti-war is not enough. If we are solely anti-war, when the war is over the movement will be over. While we are congratulating ourselves on our victories for bringing the troops home, our government in cahoots with the war machine (I am also beginning to understand that the war machine and the government are two different sides of the same worthless coin) is already planning the next war and the next way to kill our children and spread death and destruction for profit!
So true. It is the same message as Gandhi, King...

Read her whole address. It's worth it.

Exit route for allies after new Iraq deal ?

Times Online has "Exit" in their headline for the story that begins:

TONY BLAIR and President Bush are preparing to hail the formation of Iraq’s first permanent government since the fall of Saddam Hussein today — a development that should finally allow them to begin withdrawing their 140,000 troops from an ever more hostile country.
Exciting and encouraging? But then read ABC News article "More Troops Being Deployed to Iraq ."
Pentagon officials tell ABC news that two battalions — about 1,300 troops — are moving into Iraq from Kuwait. With the additional troops, there will be more than 134,000 U.S. troops in Iraq.
Officials say the troops are going for two reasons. First, they will provide reinforcements for ongoing operations against insurgents in the Sunni triangle. Second, they will provide additional security for the new Iraqi government which is expected to be named this weekend in Baghdad.
The two batallions are coming from a call-forward brigade of 3,500 troops that has been stationed in Kuwait on stand-by, ready to be rapidly deployed on short notice.
Tony Snow is really doing a great job. Two different signals sent out at once. A true magician.

But wait - if the troops are withdrawn to Kuwait or even Iran, then the first article would be true. Oh W, you word genius!

U.S. Senator Russ Feingold

Friday, May 19, 2006

In his statement objecting to the Judiciary Committee's Handling of the Constitutional Amendment on Marriage Feingold says it all when he writer:

The Constitution of the United States is an historic guarantee of individual freedom. It has served as a beacon of hope, an example to people around the world who yearn to be free and to live their lives without government interference in their most basic human decisions. I took an oath when I joined this body to support and defend the Constitution. I will continue to fight this mean-spirited, divisive, poorly drafted, and misguided amendment when it comes to the Senate floor.”
W's regime has shred the Constitution in so many ways...from wiretaps to the lies leading to the war to W's monarchy-like proclamations of being above the law. The Constitution is tattered and torn. We all need to stand up and demand that W and all Washington abide by the Constitution. We must demand an end to monarchy and tyranny.

Is it 1776 all over again?

Rumsfeld Again Accuses Iran Of Interference

Rummy continues the buildup to war.

U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has reiterated that he believes Iran is contributing to the instability in Iraq, telling U.S. senators that a hasty withdrawal from Iraq would merely serve Iran's interests.
Rumsfeld told members of the defense subcommittee of the Senate Appropriations Committee on May 17 that U.S. forces continue to find Iranian-manufactured weapons in Iraq, though he conceded that there is no conclusive proof of Iranian involvement.
"The problem we've got is unless you catch somebody from Iran, from the government of Iran, physically bringing a weapon into Iraq, and you can tie a string between the two, you can't assert that it necessarily was government-sponsored," he said.
No proof, just some Iranian-made guns and arms.

Interesting logic. So what does he have to say about the Russian, Chinese...U.S. weapons in the hands of others. Are they our enemies? Are we are worst enemy? Oops, I think the answer to that last question is YES.

Marines deliberately killed Iraqis -

Wednesday, May 17, 2006

Marines deliberately killed Iraqis deals with a Pentagon probe concerning attacks in November - similar to reports that surfaced in January, March...

probe into the death of Iraqi civilians last November in the Iraqi city of Haditha will show that U.S. Marines "killed innocent civilians in cold blood," a U.S. lawmaker said Wednesday.
From the beginning, Iraqis in the town of Haditha said U.S. Marines deliberately killed 15 unarmed Iraqi civilians, including seven women and three children.
One young Iraqi girl said the Marines killed six members of her family, including her parents. “The Americans came into the room where my father was praying,” she said, “and shot him.”
On Wednesday, Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., said the accounts are true.
Too true. But this probe will target the troops and not look at the commanders who led them to Iraq, the polticians who lied about this war, and those who are guilty of keeping troops in combat even after they are experiemcing stress related illnesses. Let's probe the BIG GUNS too.

It is time to pull out.

Syria joins Iran on the list - Venezuela too?

Monday, May 15, 2006

Washington Times reports:

U.S. intelligence agencies suspect Syria was offered and received nuclear weapons technology from the covert Pakistani supplier group headed by A.Q. Khan, according to an intelligence report.
An annual report to Congress on arms proliferation states that Pakistani investigators have confirmed reports from the International Atomic Energy Agency that the Khan network "offered nuclear technology and hardware to Syria."
"We are concerned that expertise or technology could have been transferred," said the intelligence report, which is the first time the Bush administration has publicly linked Syria to Khan.
President Bush has said that the Khan network supplied nuclear goods to Libya, Iran and North Korea.
Wait a minute. We just took Libya off watch and put the screws to Venezuela today. News reports are also saying Venezuela and Iran are becoming "chummy." So with Libya our new friend, it seems a spot for Venezuela on the "Evil" list has opened up.

Tomorrow...without West Wing

As Jed looked at that plane's window, looked into the sunlight and was asked what he was thinking of, what did he respond? TOMORROW.

A wishful and hopeful thought. But he had a less hectic life to look forward to. He had a Santos administration to look forward to.

Maybe we should start thinking and dreaming of tomorrow. After the November elections we can look forward to a Democratically controlled House investigating this regime. We can look forward to a vibrant opposition. We can look forward to future years without W and his regime's insanity.

At least I hope the sun will be shining on us as it did on Jed. I hope tomorrow will be better than today.

The Gift of Peace for Mother's Day

Friday, May 12, 2006

The Gift of Peace for Mother's Day is from Medea Benjamin - cofounder of CODEPINK. She reminds us of the true origin of Mother's Day.

Mothers Day was NOT invented by Hallmark. Or by 1-800-FLOWERS or even Sees Candies. In fact, Julia Ward Howe, the woman credited with initiating Mothers Day in 1870, would have been appalled by its crass commercialism. Were she alive today, Julia probably would have told her kids to dispense with the roses and chocolates, and instead join her in an anti-war rally. Yes, Julia Ward Howe was a peacenik.
While best known for writing the Battle Hymn of the Republic and her stance against slavery, Julia was horrified by the carnage and suffering during the Civil War and the economic devastation that followed. She was also heart-broken by the outbreak of war between France and Germany in 1870, with its ominous display of German military might and imperial designs. She used her poetic gift to pen a proclamation against war, a proclamation that birthed Mothers Day.
"Our husbands will not come to us, reeking with carnage, for caresses and applause," Julia wrote. "Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn all that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy and patience. We, the women of one country, will be too tender of those of another country to allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs. " Her solution? Women should gather together to "promote the alliance of the different nationalities, the amicable settlement of international questions, the great and general interests of peace."
How appropriate her proclamation is today.

Doomed, I tell ya!

Tuesday, May 09, 2006

That's the way I feel lately. Doomed as a nation, doomed as a race, doomed as a planet.

There are still 30% or more of this nation who view W as King. There are those who are ready to rally around him when he drops the bomb on Iran! There are too many people who do not speak out against the war! There are too many who never question the government's actions.

The economy bites! The rich are getting richer and everyone else - the gap between the rich and "not rich" is widening.

Gas prices are rising yet we hear nothing about conservation. And we see too many out riding around in their SUVs for a weekend jaunt. The planet is ready to cough - and yet we hear too few talking about the environment. Too many environmental laws have been thwarted and ignored. And too many people do not think twice about throwing that empty out the window on the freeway.

Our government spies on us and yet our elected leaders do nothing about it. Changes in the CIA point to increasing wiretaps.

Our elected representatives sit on their wallets and do nothing about the lies, corruption...

Our nation is becoming a corporate state - a nation for the rich and corporations, by the rich and corporations... And yet too few do anything about it.

Our complacency is what is really dooming us. Our willingness to let this all happen is to blame.

Maybe we should just smile and let this all happen. Why waste our energies and voices. Why be the voices calling out in the wilderness?

Tired! Disgusted! State of dispair! Sometimes I wish there were a small corner on this planet where I can go, curl up, and not care.

Deja vu - all over again

US to form anti-Iran coalition if UN rejects sanctions

The United States is ready to form a coalition of countries to take sanctions against Iran if the UN Security Council does not agree measures, the US ambassador to the United Nations, John Bolton, said.
Bolton told a Congress committee that the United States and its allies would press ahead with a first UN Security Council resolution condemning Iran even if Russia and China abstain.
He added that if one of the permanent members of the Security Council vetoed a later measure ordering sanctions, the United States would seek alternative ways to punish Iran.
"If we were faced with a veto by one of the permanent members, if for whatever reason the council couldn't fulfill its responsibilities, then I think it would be incumbent on us, and I'm sure we would press ahead to ask other countries or other groups of countries to impose those sanctions," Bolton said.
Wonder how many from the Iraqi adventure coalition will sign up for this one?

The president can tell researchers to withhold any information from Congress...

Turkey won’t let U.S. attack Iran from its land

Turkey is a problem we'll deal with later - Right W?

Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul said Sunday that his country refused a request from the United States to attack Iran from its Air Force base in Incirlik, despite the U.S. offer of a nuclear reactor, according to a report in Al Biyan.
In an interview for the United Arab Emirates newspaper, Gul noted that America’s efforts to attack Iran are “imaginary” and that Turkey’s stance is “strategic” and refuses the use of its land for any belligerent activity against neighboring countries.
Wait, we were going to give them a reactor? Boy my in-laws would have been pissed. Still hurting over the family lives lost during the Armenian Genocide.

Likewise we all would be pissed because years later we would be bombing Turkey because of that reactor. Today's friend - tomorrow's foe.

An American Hero - Stephen Colbert.

Thank You Stephen Colbert. What a great gig.

I think this piece of Colbert as White House Press Dope was great - the star: Helen.

His whole speech was so spot on. Anyone have a complete transcript? His digs at W were great. Wonder if W got them?

Editor & Publisher doesn't think so.

As Colbert walked from the podium, when it was over, the president and First Lady gave him quick nods, unsmiling. The president shook his hand and tapped his elbow, and left immediately.
Those seated near Bush told E&P's Joe Strupp, who was elsewhere in the room, that Bush had quickly turned from an amused guest to an obviously offended target as Colbert’s comments brought up his low approval ratings and problems in Iraq.
Several veterans of past dinners, who requested anonymity, said the presentation was more directed at attacking the president than in the past. Several said previous hosts, like Jay Leno, equally slammed both the White House and the press corps.
“This was anti-Bush,” said one attendee. “Usually they go back and forth between us and him.” Another noted that Bush quickly turned unhappy. “You could see he stopped smiling about halfway through Colbert,” he reported.
Truthiness hurts sometimes.
